Et maintenant!... je suis la risée de plus jeunes que moi, De ceux dont je dédaignais de mettre les pères Parmi les chiens de mon troupeau.
But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.
واما الآن فقد ضحك علي اصاغري اياما الذين كنت استنكف من ان اجعل آبائهم مع كلاب غنمي.

Mais à quoi me servirait la force de leurs mains? Ils sont incapables d'atteindre la vieillesse.
Yea, whereto might the strength of their hands profit me, in whom old age was perished?
قوة ايديهم ايضا ما هي لي. فيهم عجزت الشيخوخة.

Desséchés par la misère et la faim, Ils fuient dans les lieux arides, Depuis longtemps abandonnés et déserts;
For want and famine they were solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.
في العوز والمحل مهزولون عارقون اليابسة التي هي منذ امس خراب وخربة.

Ils arrachent près des arbrisseaux les herbes sauvages, Et ils n'ont pour pain que la racine des genêts.
Who cut up mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots for their meat.
الذين يقطفون الملاح عند الشيح واصول الرّتم خبزهم.

On les chasse du milieu des hommes, On crie après eux comme après des voleurs.
They were driven forth from among men, (they cried after them as after a thief;)
من الوسط يطردون. يصيحون عليهم كما على لص.

Ils habitent dans d'affreuses vallées, Dans les cavernes de la terre et dans les rochers;
To dwell in the cliffs of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.
للسكن في اودية مرعبة وثقب التراب والصخور.

Ils hurlent parmi les buissons, Ils se rassemblent sous les ronces.
Among the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they were gathered together.
بين الشيح ينهقون. تحت العوسج ينكبّون.

Etres vils et méprisés, On les repousse du pays.
They were children of fools, yea, children of base men: they were viler than the earth.
ابناء الحماقة بل ابناء اناس بلا اسم سيطوا من الارض

Et maintenant, je suis l'objet de leurs chansons, Je suis en butte à leurs propos.
And now am I their song, yea, I am their byword.
اما الآن فصرت اغنيتهم واصبحت لهم مثلا.

Ils ont horreur de moi, ils se détournent, Ils me crachent au visage.
They abhor me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face.
يكرهونني. يبتعدون عني وامام وجهي لم يمسكوا عن البسق.

Ils n'ont plus de retenue et ils m'humilient, Ils rejettent tout frein devant moi.
Because he hath loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me.
لانه اطلق العنان وقهرني فنزعوا الزمام قدامي.

Ces misérables se lèvent à ma droite et me poussent les pieds, Ils se fraient contre moi des sentiers pour ma ruine;
Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.
عن اليمين الفروخ يقومون يزيحون رجلي ويعدّون عليّ طرقهم للبوار.

Ils détruisent mon propre sentier et travaillent à ma perte, Eux à qui personne ne viendrait en aide;
They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, they have no helper.
افسدوا سبلي. اعانوا على سقوطي. لا مساعد عليهم.

Ils arrivent comme par une large brèche, Ils se précipitent sous les craquements.
They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.
ياتون كصدع عريض. تحت الهدّة يتدحرجون.

Les terreurs m'assiègent; Ma gloire est emportée comme par le vent, Mon bonheur a passé comme un nuage.
Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passeth away as a cloud.
انقلبت عليّ اهوال. طردت كالريح نعمتي فعبرت كالسحاب سعادتي

Et maintenant, mon âme s'épanche en mon sein, Les jours de la souffrance m'ont saisi.
And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.
فالآن انهالت نفسي عليّ واخذتني ايام المذلّة.

La nuit me perce et m'arrache les os, La douleur qui me ronge ne se donne aucun repos,
My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.
الليل ينخر عظامي فيّ وعارقيّ لا تهجع.

Par la violence du mal mon vêtement perd sa forme, Il se colle à mon corps comme ma tunique.
By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.
بكثرة الشدة تنكّر لبسي. مثل جيب قميصي حزمتني.

Dieu m'a jeté dans la boue, Et je ressemble à la poussière et à la cendre.
He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.
قد طرحني في الوحل فاشبهت التراب والرماد.

Je crie vers toi, et tu ne me réponds pas; Je me tiens debout, et tu me lances ton regard.
I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardest me not.
اليك اصرخ فما تستجيب لي. اقوم فما تنتبه اليّ.

Tu deviens cruel contre moi, Tu me combats avec la force de ta main.
Thou art become cruel to me: with thy strong hand thou opposest thyself against me.
تحولت الى جاف من نحوي. بقدرة يدك تضطهدني.

Tu mu soulèves, tu mu fais voler au-dessus du vent, Et tu m'anéantis au bruit de la tempête.
Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride upon it, and dissolvest my substance.
حملتني اركبتني الريح وذوبتني تشوها.

Car, je le sais, tu me mènes à la mort, Au rendez-vous de tous les vivants.
For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.
لاني اعلم انك الى الموت تعيدني والى بيت ميعاد كل حيّ.

Mais celui qui va périr n'étend-il pas les mains? Celui qui est dans le malheur n'implore-t-il pas du secours?
Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.
ولكن في الخراب ألا يمد يدا. في البليّة ألا يستغيث عليها

N'avais-je pas des larmes pour l'infortuné? Mon coeur n'avait-il pas pitié de l'indigent?
Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul grieved for the poor?
ألم ابك لمن عسر يومه. ألم تكتئب نفسي على المسكين.

J'attendais le bonheur, et le malheur est arrivé; J'espérais la lumière, et les ténèbres sont venues.
When I looked for good, then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkness.
حينما ترجيت الخير جاء الشر. وانتظرت النور فجاء الدجى.

Mes entrailles bouillonnent sans relâche, Les jours de la calamité m'ont surpris.
My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction prevented me.
امعائي تغلي ولا تكف. تقدمتني ايام المذلة.

Je marche noirci, mais non par le soleil; Je me lève en pleine assemblée, et je crie.
I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation.
اسوددت لكن بلا شمس. قمت في الجماعة اصرخ.

Je suis devenu le frère des chacals, Le compagnon des autruches.
I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.
صرت اخا للذئاب وصاحبا لرئال النعام.

Ma peau noircit et tombe, Mes os brûlent et se dessèchent.
My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.
حرش جلدي عليّ وعظامي احترّت من الحرارة فيّ.

Ma harpe n'est plus qu'un instrument de deuil, Et mon chalumeau ne peut rendre que des sons plaintifs.
My harp also is turned to mourning, and my organ into the voice of them that weep.
